Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) Battery Assembly

A NiMH battery pack produces 201.6 volts direct current (DC) for this application. This rechargeable, high-voltage battery supplies power to the hybrid system to be used for electric propulsion. NiMH has been used in production hybrids since 1997. This technology is still present in today's hybrid vehicles and will be used in a number of future hybrid vehicles. There is, however, newer and more expensive battery technology available in the form of lithium-ion batteries.

Each of the 28 individual batteries, illustrated above, is 7.2 volts direct current (DC). The individual batteries are connected in series.

7.2 volts x 28 batteries = 201.6 volts DC

High-Voltage Battery (Battery Modules)
The high-voltage battery supplies electrical power to Motor/Generator (MG) 1 and MG 2 in accordance with the driving conditions of the vehicle. The high voltage battery is recharged by MG1 and MG2 in accordance with the start-of-charge (SOC) and the driving conditions of the vehicle.

The terminal voltage may be much higher at times than 201.6 volts. The base voltage does not include a surface charge that is the result of charging the battery from regenerative braking or the internal combustion engine driving MG1. A normal value from stored chemical energy varies for this battery; it is not unusual to see 220 volts during diagnostics.
